Cool temperatures in Santa Rosa to continue

A thick marine layer dampened streets and kept Santa Rosa cooler than normal on Tuesday, with the possibility that the afternoon high temperature could be a record low.

"It's not common, this is not something you expect in Santa Rosa, it is mostly what you expect on the coast," said Diane Henderson, a forecaster for the National Weather Service in Monterey. "It would not be a surprise for Bodega Bay or Sea Ranch or Point Reyes."

At 9:30 a.m., the temperature was 54 degrees at the Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport.

The forecast is for a high temperature of 62 degrees, which would be lower than the 64 degrees that was the high temperature for July 27, 1986.

The fog layer is so thick that it is flowing over the tops of the coastal mountains and is even affecting Ukiah to the north and Paso Robles to the south, Henderson said.

Henderson said it will be a little warmer on Wednesday, but there won't be a warming trend until Thursday, when temperatures will be in the 70s, with temperatures in the mid 70s for the weekend.
