A suspected marijuana gardener shot dead by a Mendocino County Sheriff's officer Tuesday morning has been identified as Angel Hernandez Farias, 24.
Sheriff's officials described him as a transient. His origins remain under investigation, said District Attorney Meredith Lintott, whose office is investigating the officer-involved shooting.
Farias was shot after leveling his rifle at law enforcement officials entering the garden on U.S. Forest Service land in the northeastern corner of Mendocino County, sheriff's officials said.
Sheriff Tom Allman said the officer who fired the shot will not be identified until the investigation into the shooting is concluded.
