Conservation Corps North Bay to honor Sonoma Land Trust's Benson

The leader of Sonoma Land Trust is to be recognized for his environmental work by the Conservation Corps North Bay, the agency announced.

Ralph Benson, the Land Trust's executive director, was chosen as the recipient of the 2012 Pamela Wright Lloyd Environmental Stewardship Award.

Benson has led the Land Trust since 2003, a period in which it has acquired more than 6,000 acres on San Pablo Bay and along Highway 37. It is working on the Sears Point Restoration Project, which seeks to restore 1,000 acres of tidal wetlands and lengthen the Bay Trail.

Benson also steered the creation of the Baylands Center at Sears Point Ranch. And under his tenure, the Land Trust took a lead role in the $36 million purchase of the 5,630-acre Jenner Headlands, the largest conservation purchase in Sonoma County history.

Benson is to be honored Oct. 11 in Larkspur, at the Conservation Corps' 30th anniversary ceremony.
