SAN FRANCISCO — An independent analysis of the electronic meter-reading system operated by California's largest utility says the devices are highly accurate, despite thousands of customer complaints.
The report on Pacific Gas & Electric Co.'s "smart meter" program was released Thursday at a meeting of the California Public Utilities Commission. The regulators had ordered the five-month review.
The report found smart meters were accurately gauging electricity use. It said poor customer service by PG&E contributed to widespread customer dissatisfaction.
Democratic state Sen. Dean Florez of Shafter says he plans to convene a legislative hearing on the devices.
Smart meters are currently installed in 5.5 million households, mostly in the Central Valley and Bay Area.
