Marin County teen due home 2 months after baseball injury

SAN FRANCISCO — A Marin County teenager whose traumatic brain injury raised concerns about the use of metal baseball bats in high school games is finally going home.

Gunnar Sandberg, a pitcher for Marin Catholic High School, was hit in the head by a line drive during a March 11 practice game.

The 16-year-old has been hospitalized ever since.

In a Web posting, older sister Kalli Sandberg says Gunnar is scheduled to be released Tuesday from the San Francisco rehabilitation hospital where he's spent the last month relearning how to speak and walk. Before that, he was in intensive care at Marin General Hospital.

Marin County youth sports officials have since banned the use of non-wood bats.
