Santa Rosa police find rental home converted to indoor marijuana farm

Brothers renting a central Santa Rosa home were arrested Tuesday after police discovered the pair converted the house into an indoor-outdoor marijuana farm, Santa Rosa police reported.

The distinctive skunky odor of marijuana led to a stream of complaints from neighbors and passersby about possible marijuana cultivation along Macklyn Avenue near Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, Sgt. Eric Litchfield said.

"Even people walking by who were down at the other end of the block were telling us, &‘We could smell it,'" Litchfield said.

Detectives Tuesday served a search warrant on the property, where they found 30 pounds of dried pot, $2,000 in cash and a bedroom and garage that had been converted into marijuana-growing rooms, Litchfield said.

Renters Christopher Haynes, 28, and Jacob Haynes, 24, made significant modifications to the home's electrical wiring and structure, Litchfield said. City code enforcement officers were called to the scene to evaluate the damage. The landlord wasn't aware of the renovations, he said.

Officers also found a backyard garden with 20 marijuana plants, some as tall as 7 feet, Litchfield said.

Both men were held on $20,000 bail on suspicion of marijuana cultivation, sales and conspiracy to commit a felony. Christopher Haynes was posting bond on the bail amount Tuesday night, jail staff said.
