Humboldt supes endorse pot legalization initiative

EUREKA - Humboldt County lawmakers have reluctantly thrown their support behind the November ballot initiative to legalize recreational marijuana use.

The Eureka Times-Standard reports that the Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 Tuesday to endorse Proposition 19.

Supervisor Mark Lovelace originally wanted the board to not take a position on the measure, saying it left too much in the hands of local governments to figure out.

He ended up supporting the endorsement after Supervisor Bonnie Neely countered that the board could not ignore marijuana's role in the county's economic future.

Humboldt County lies in the heart of California's so-called Emerald Triangle, the state's longtime pot-producing hub.

The California State Association of Counties has come out against the measure.
