Rabbitt critical of plan to preserve 150 miles of road

Sonoma County Board of Supervisors candidate David Rabbitt said Tuesday he would have voted against a plan to limit pavement preservation to a select list of 31 county roads.

"I would not want to throw in the towel," Rabbitt said, noting that the maintenance plan approved Tuesday by the Board of Supervisors covers only 11 percent of the county road system.

More than 1,200 miles of roads would be left to fail in the next 10 years, officials said.

"I can't see us reverting back to gravel roads," said Rabbitt, a Petaluma city councilman.

He's running against Petaluma Mayor Pam Torliatt in the 2nd District, which includes Petaluma, Cotati, a portion of Rohnert Park and the unincorporated communities of Penngrove, Two Rock, Bloomfield and Valley Ford. The election is Nov. 2.

Torliatt did not return phone calls to her cell phone and home, and her campaign consultant also did not respond to calls requesting comment.
