Probe continues in attack, man's death

Mendocino County sheriff's officials Tuesday continued to try to reach family members of a Healdsburg man found dead at the bottom of a Mendocino County cliff.

The man's name wasn't released Tuesday because his family hadn't been notified, Mendocino County Sheriff's Capt. Kurt Smallcomb said.

An autopsy was conducted Tuesday, but results weren't available, Smallcomb said. A final determination won't be made until toxicology tests are completed in a few weeks.

Healdsburg police believe the man was a 32-year-old Healdsburg resident who earlier Monday had stabbed his partner.

The 39-year-old victim had deep slices to his neck and throat area and was hospitalized. His name wasn't released because he was a victim of a crime that could include domestic violence.

He'd awakened Monday to the knife attack and the two men had struggled, police said.

The victim asked his attacker for help and a ride to the hospital but was refused, Sgt. Kevin Young said.

The suspect then drove off in the victim's car.

A few hours later, a man believed to be the attacker was found dead at the foot of a 65-foot drop on a ranch in southern Mendocino County. The victim's car was parked nearby.

The death is being investigated as a suicide.
