Federal hunger-relief program available through Redwood Empire Food Bank

Sonoma County seniors on fixed incomes and low-income families with children under the age of 6 may be eligible for a hunger-relief program through the Redwood Empire Food Bank.

The U.S. Agriculture Department's Commodity Supplemental Food Program provides a monthly 30-pound box of foods that includes cheese, cereal, dry or evaporated milk, juice, rice, pasta, peanut butter, canned meats, fruits and vegetables.

Eligible seniors must be 60 or older and have incomes that do not exceed $1,174 a month for a single person and $1,579 for couples.

Families with children under 6 are eligible if they meet income guidelines and are not currently participating in Women, Infants and Children food programs.

Monthly income may not exceed $2,247 for a family of two, $2,823 for a family of three, $3,400 for a family of four and up to $5,706 for a family of seven. For each additional family member, add $577 per month.

Families also are eligible if they are currently enrolled in food stamps, Medi-Cal or CalWorks.
