Disaster ignored

EDITOR: If a picture's worth a thousand words, the Associated Press photo on Sunday's page A15 says what ("A mudslide looms")? The man rushing down the street, arms loaded with clothes, appears to be a thief running away.

Is this the best coverage you give to a disaster on the scale of Hurricane Katrina? In Colombia, torrential rains and mudslides have killed an estimated 200 people and left 2 million homeless.

Personal phone calls and graphic photos in e-mails have alerted relatives here to this natural disaster. It's incredible to Colombians that our media have not covered this crisis. Colombia is our best ally in the region, yet we ignore it when Colombians need assistance.

On its own, the Red Cross of Colombia lacks the resources to care for the overwhelming number of victims. The international community has yet to respond. Is it because our media don't feel it's newsworthy?
