A coat to spare?

EDITOR: Recent headlines told the chilling news that one in seven Americans lives in poverty. It's easy to read a headline, feel a momentary chill and then go on with the day. But, take a moment to try this.

Stand at a corner and notice six other people nearby. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the "one in seven" person is one of you. Shift your gaze to a group of children nearby. Sadly, one in five children lives in poverty.

These facts - cold as winter itself - inspired the Unitarian Universalist youth group and Advocates for Social Justice to plan a winter coat drive for Sunday.

On behalf of the nonprofit One Warm Coat and local charities, they will be collecting clean, gently used coats at the Glaser Center, 547 Mendocino Ave., Santa Rosa, until 3:30 p.m. All donations will go directly to Santa Rosa charities as quickly as possible.

Our shared mission? That no one will go cold this winter.

So, have you got coats? Got an extra? With your help, we can make Santa Rosa a warmer place this winter for those in need.
