Medicinal marijuana plants in Mendocino County can now be identified by visible tags distributed by the sheriff?s department.

Sales of medicinal marijuana zip-ties began Wednesday at noon.

The ties help law enforcement identify if a plant is being grown for legal purposes. If it can not be verified that a plant is legal it is subject to confiscation and destruction.

The program was tested in 2007 by Mendocino County Sheriff?s officials who called it ?successful.?

Ties are sold at the Sheriff?s Department to those holding medical marijuana permit. Each patient who currently grows their own marijuana or plans to grow their own can purchase up to six ties at a cost of $25 each.

Veterans and those on Medi-Cal can receive the ties at half price, authorities said.

Revenue generated by sales of the markers will be deposited into the county?s general fund.

The twist-tie pot markers were authorized by the Mendocino County Board of Supervisors.
