SRJC police release suspect sketch

Santa Rosa Junior College police investigators have released a sketch of a man who sexually assaulted a female campus employee Tuesday morning.

The woman, who was attacked while she was working alone in her Burbank Auditorium office, fought back and the two had a violent struggle before she began to scream for help and the man finally fled, SRJC campus police Sgt. David Willat said Wednesday.

"She's feeling the residual effects of going through a fight. She's tired," Willat said.

A theater arts worker in her 50s, the victim met with a sketch artist for several hours Wednesday afternoon, officials said. The assailant was described as a short, stocky Latino man in his mid-20s to 30s, wearing a sleeveless white T-shirt, dark pants and black gloves.

He remained at large Wednesday, and Willat said campus police had received a number of phone calls reporting "suspicious people."

Notices were put up around campus Tuesday night by college police cadets, alerting students - due back in class today - of the attack.

Willat noted that there were few people on campus Wednesday because of the Veterans Day holiday. No classes were held Tuesday, which was a day of professional development activities for campus staff.

College officials said they wanted to make sure people knew of the crime after the two-day break.

The woman told police that the attacker knocked on her office door about 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, and when she opened it, he came into the office and began to attack her, police said.

"Without going into details, it was a sexual assault," Willat said.

She attempted to fight him off, but the assailant did not run away until she began to scream, he said.

The cut and bruised woman told other employees at the Burbank Auditorium that she had been attacked by an unknown man outside her office.

She was treated for her injuries at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center and released.
