SRJC attack brings changes to theater arts building

Self-defense classes, new locks and a buddy system are some of the changes Santa Rosa Junior College officials are considering after a staff member was sexually assaulted on campus Tuesday.

The woman told police that she answered a knock on her office door at the Burbank Auditorium about 10:45 a.m. Tuesday and was accosted by a man who remained at large Friday.

The cut and bruised woman screamed and the man fled, launching a search and investigation into the attack.

Leslie McCauley, chair of the theater arts department which is housed in the Burbank Auditorium, said staff are more angry than scared that one of their colleagues was attacked. Department and facilities staff will discuss additional safety policies with police at a meeting Friday afternoon.

"We all work late nights - we're in the theater - but this happened during the day during normal working hours and that's what's thrown everybody," McCauley said.

McCauley said the department would monitor staff hours more closely to ensure no one is in the building alone. Marty Kinahan, an instructor in the physical education department, offered to teach a self-defense workshop next Friday.

The staff member who was attacked came into work Thursday to finish a project but stayed home Friday, according to McCauley.

"She's understandably very tired, and she's still quite bruised and stiff," McCauley said.
