Gore the bright spot vs. Eagles

Quarterbacks

D

Alex Smith got off to a rough start, and he did not get a lot of help from his teammates. His three first-half interceptions put the 49ers in a hole from which they could not escape.

Running backs

A

Frank Gore ended a streak of 23 consecutive games, including playoffs, in which the Eagles did not allow a 100-yard rusher. Gore carried 16 times for 107 yards.

Receivers

D

Delanie Walker had a critical first-quarter fumble, and Vernon Davis did not go for a pass from Smith that resulted in an interception. It was not a good day for the wideouts.

Offensive line

C

The line opened some holes in the run game. The pass protection could have been better, but a lot of that was not the fault of the offensive line.

Defensive line

C

The 49ers were unable to generate any pressure on quarterback Donovan McNabb, who was not sacked and generally had all the time he needed to deliver the ball down the field.

Linebackers

C

Parys Haralson, Manny Lawson and Ahmad Brooks did not put any heat on McNabb. Takeo Spikes gave up a big play down the field in coverage against Brent Celek.

Defensive backs

C

Shawntae Spencer and Dre? Bly came up with interceptions, but there were also too many blown coverages in the secondary, which enabled McNabb to throw for 306 yards. DeSean Jackson had 140 yards receiving.

Special teams

B

Josh Morgan had a 52-yard kickoff return at the start of the second half. Joe Nedney made a 51-yard FG. Andy Lee?s punting was good, as usual.

Coaching/overall

D

The 49ers were unable to build on their strong showing Monday night, as they fell behind 20-3 at halftime. The loss ends all 49ers playoff hopes and assures them of a seventh consecutive non-winning season.
