Algae warning continues for Clear Lake

People and their pets should stay out of the water in the Clearlake area, Lake County health officials said Friday.

Smelly, scummy blue-green algae is in heavy bloom along the shores of Clear Lake at Austin park, Clearlake Highlands and the inner harbor area of the city of Clearlake.

Health officials first issued the warning last Saturday, and repeated their concerns on Friday.

Some types of the algae release toxins and allergens that can cause skin rashes.

County Health Officer Dr. Karen Tait advises that people stay away from areas with visible algae mats and not drink the water.

The algae also releases sulfur containing gases that are similar to sewer gases. When the algae problem first surfaced, it was reported as a possible sewer spill.
