Santa Rosa man struck, killed in crosswalk

A 50-year-old Santa Rosa man was struck and killed at the intersection of Highway 12 and Jack London Drive in Santa Rosa late Wednesday.

The man, who was not identified by police, was reportedly walking or running in the marked crosswalk at 11:35 p.m. when he was struck by a vehicle driven by Newton H. Martin, 70, of Santa Rosa.

According to police, Newton was traveling west in his Toyota Land Cruiser when the pedestrian appeared in his path as he passed Jack London Drive. It was unclear if the pedestrian was walking or running, but police believe he was in the marked crosswalk.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Alcohol and speeding to not appear to be factors in the case, according to police.

The case is under investigation.
