Forum planned in Sonoma on PG&E's SmartMeters

Sonoma residents can learn more about the high-tech electric and gas meters that are being installed at their homes and businesses at a forum next Monday sponsored by PG&E.

The company has held several such forums in cities across Sonoma County as so-called SmartMeters are rolled out.

The company says the devices will help to lower energy use and costs by more accurately reading meters and allowing customers to access that information in real-time.

A study commissioned by the California Public Utilities Commission found that the meters are by and large accurate.

Critics, however, contend the study was flawed and that the meters pose health risks related to the electromagnetic fields they emit.

PG&E has installed nearly 380,000 new meters in Sonoma County, including nearly 32,000 in the city of Sonoma.

Monday's forum is from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Sonoma Community Center, 276 East Napa Street.
