Softball fundraiser for Calli Murray's family Saturday

A daylong fundraiser for the family of a 2-year-old killed after being struck by a car in a Rohnert Park crosswalk kicks off Saturday morning.

The first pitch in "Play for Calli, a Men's Softball Tournament" is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. in Magnolia Park. Ten teams are enrolled and the championship game is set to start between 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

Organizers are hoping for a broader showing than simply players for the event, which will include a bake sale and a raffle featuring San Francisco Giants and Golden State Warriors memorabilia.

"We're hoping to get as many people as we can to show up and support the cause and support the fund. You don't have to play softball, there's plenty of other things there for everybody," said Darrel Cattani, who put together the fundraiser with his wife.

Calli Murray, 2, was killed in December while crossing a Snyder Lane crosswalk with her mother, Ling Murray, who was also struck and suffered severe injuries.

The driver, Kaitlyn Dunaway, 18, a Sonoma State University student, has not yet entered a plea. She is alleged to have been preoccupied with her cell phone and may have been sending a text message at the time of the crash.
