Petaluma-based Amy's Kitchen has won the "best vegan chocolate" award from Peta2, a youth-based arm of the animal rights organization PETA.
The group's fifth annual Libby Awards ("Libby" is for "liberation") honor animal-friendly people and products. PETA, which stands for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, is active worldwide in animal-rights issues.
Visitors to the organization's website, www.peta2.com, helped the group's leaders choose the winners, said Ashley Gonzalez, PETA spokeswoman.
"Amy's egg- and dairy-free chocolate cakes are as kind to animals as they are to a confirmed chocoholic's taste buds," said peta2 director Dan Shannon in announcing the award. "Amy's Kitchen is helping to lead the way in placing delicious vegan options squarely in the mainstream."
Amy's chocolate cakes, which also come gluten-free, have no trans fat or preservatives and are made with organic ingredients.
The company also offers a variety of frozen meals, pizzas, pocket sandwiches, pot pies, canned soups, beans, chili, pasta sauces and salsas. The company's products are widely available in Sonoma County.
