The Sonoma County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday restored nearly 5.7 miles of road in unincorporated areas of the county to its plans for regular long-term maintenance.
The unanimous vote increased by 4 percent the current network of county roads targeted for upkeep.
The 10 identified road segments include two miles of Bennett Valley Road outside of Santa Rosa, nearly a mile of Verano Avenue outside Sonoma and shorter stretches of main roads beyond the city limits in Rohnert Park and Petaluma.
Those segments will join an existing, select list of 150 road miles of the county's 1,387-mile network that are the only roads set to receive long-term surface maintenance under a controversial plan adopted by the county last year.
Citing budget constraints, supervisors voted to limit upkeep on the remainder of the network - more than 1,200 miles - to routine fixes, including brush clearing, pothole and storm repair. That level of upkeep would essentially allow most of the roads to fail within 10 years, county officials conceded at the time.
The latest additions included major routes on the outskirts of cities with at least 4,500 vehicle trips per day that also qualify for federal funding assistance.
The board is set to return to the issue Sept. 20 with an eye toward clarifying what stretches of Bennett Valley Road in the county are now set to receive long-term maintenance.
Tuesday's vote added back to the maintenance list a two-mile stretch of Bennett Valley Road from the Santa Rosa city limit to Grange Road.
