Police seek witnesses to Santa Rosa crosswalk crash

Santa Rosa police are seeking witnesses to a Tuesday afternoon vehicle crash in which a 22-year-old woman was struck in a crosswalk and suffered major head injuries.

Yanet Ramirez was 12 or 15 feet into the crosswalk at Guerneville and Fulton roads when she was struck by a turning panel truck at 2:58 p.m., police Sgt. Rich Celli said.

The truck driver, Napa resident Rick Casassa, 50, said he didn't see her enter the crosswalk but was among the first to offer first aid when she was struck, Celli said.

Investigators have access to surveillance video from a nearby gas station and were working Wednesday to enhance its clarity, Celli said.

But they're hoping to talk to some witnesses who may have seen what happened at what's generally a very busy intersection, he said.

"There's got to be more witnesses to this," Celli said Wednesday.

He said both Yanet and Casassa were southbound initially, with Yanet in the crosswalk on the west side of the intersection. Casassa struck her when he turned westbound.

Investigators do not believe alcohol or cell phone use were factors in the crash but are hoping witnesses might shed light on what occurred.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call traffic Officer Hirochi Yaguchi at(707) 543-3636.

Ramirez is the latest person injured in a continuing spate of vehicle v. pedestrian crashes that most recently took the life of a 4-year-old boy crossing West Ninth Street in Santa Rosa.
