Sonoma County light bulb disposal program expanded

Sonoma County is expanding a program offering drop-off locations for disposal of fluorescent light bulbs.

The program, supported by the Sonoma County Waste Management Agency and administered by PG&E, now offers 26 sites throughout the county for disposal of spent bulbs.

Because the bulbs contain small amounts of mercury, state law prohibits their disposal at landfills.

New drop-off locations include Cloverdale Ace Hardware, Orchard Supply Hardware stores in Santa Rosa and Petaluma, Garrett Ace Hardware in Healdsburg, the Graton and Healdsburg Day Labor Centers, Occidental Hardware, Nuestra Voz of Sonoma, the Lamp and Shade Shop in Santa Rosa and Sea Ranch Supply.

A complete list of drop-off sites is available on the waste management agency's website, www.recyclenow.org/toxics/fluorescent.asp.
