The private company that runs Rohnert Park's municipal golf courses must pay overdue rent and open its financial books before the city will discuss changes to its lease, city officials said Wednesday.
Petaluma-based CourseCo has said it needs to restructure the lease because it is losing too much money running the 36-hole club. The company says it has lost $4 million since taking over Foxtail's operations in 2001.
"It's not sustainable," said Tom Isaak, CourseCo's president.
Rohnert Park City Manager Gabe Gonzalez said Wednesday the city will first ask for $157,607 the company owes for the past year's rent.
"We are going send a demand letter to CourseCo for the delinquent payments," he said.
Isaak said Wednesday, "I'm sure that they will do that and that's part of the problem and part of the issues, and it's a lot of money."
He declined to comment on whether the company will pay the full amount.
The city also wants additional information about the company's financial health, Gonzalez said.
"They've stated that they're losing money, so we'd be interested in getting more detailed information about their cash flows, their financials, to get a better picture of what their actual financial situation is," Gonzalez said.
The City Council reviewed the request by Isaak Tuesday and directed staff to work with him to analyze the options for renegotiating the lease.
"We're going to collegially, amicably as partners, which we've been for 10 years, work on this together," said Isaak.
