SSU student pushing for campus-wide smoking ban

Student leaders at Sonoma State University are considering a campuswide smoking ban, although the student who proposed it concedes it has slight chance at success.

"The chemicals from cigarettes have always been a bother to me, ever since I arrived on campus three years ago," said Jason Villeggiante, a student senator from the School of Science and Technology.

He told the university's Associated Students leadership that a survey he conducted showed that 47 percent of students favored a campuswide ban.

Associated Students President Bridgette Dussan said she would probably not support such a ban.

"I think people who smoke still voted for me so I think I still represent them," she said.

The student senate is to vote on the proposal March 25.

Villeggiante on Thursday said, "Honestly, I do not think this will pass."

Still, he said, "I will instead be pushing for a ban on the central university grounds."
