Santa Rosa protestors link war, economy

About a dozen protestors occupied a sidewalk outside the Armed Forces Career Center on Santa Rosa Avenue on Friday, trying to draw a connection between war and the struggling U.S. economy.

"It's distressing how much of our tax money goes to the military rather than schools," said Jim Lobdell of Santa Rosa.

Edythe Briggs, an 86-year-old retired teacher from Sebastopol, carried a sign reading "Heal America - Tax Wall Street."

The demonstration was sponsored by the Peace and Justice Center of Sonoma County. The center has been pressing a theme of the Occupy Wall Street movement, said coordinator Susan Lamont.

"We've been talking about taxing the rich for three years," she said.

Friday's demonstration also marked the 10th anniversary of the U.S. war in Afghanistan, she said.

No one answered the door at the military recruiting center.
