The Kendall-Jackson Wine Center opened its doors to wine lovers on Friday, and customers roamed the softly lit tasting room of the storied winery a day after founder Jess Jackson died.
Bob Texeira, a pourer in the tasting room, offered samplings of Jackson Hills Chardonnay and Highland Estates Lake Hills Meritage White for a quiet crowd.
"We're proud to pour it," Texeira said. "He was a dynamic individual in the modern day wine business, and he's revolutionized the way vineyards are built."
A fluffy black-and-white cat named "Jackson" blinked in the sun near the doors of the wine center on Santa Rosa's Fulton Avenue and occasionally nuzzled customers who lingered there.
"People have been bringing their condolences all day long, and have been calling," said Steve Haymaker, tasting room lead. "He had a heart of gold and really took care of his people."
Plans for a public memorial have not been finalized, said Caroline Shaw, chief communications officer for Jackson Family Wines. An announcement is not anticipated until next week.
