Homicide victim ID'd as 20-year-old Rohnert Park man

A man found dead of an apparent gunshot wound in Rohnert Park Friday has been identified as Kevin C. Craft, a 20-year-old local resident.

Craft's body was discovered around 8 a.m. Friday in the parking lot behind the Best Western Inn on Redwood Drive. He appeared to have been killed by a single-shot to the chest. An autopsy Monday will confirm the nature of the wounds.

"We are working non-stop, around-the-clock following up on leads," Rohnert Park Public Safety Sgt. Jeff Nicks said Saturday.

Craft was believed to have been killed sometime Friday morning, though Nicks declined to say how long the body may have been lying in the parking lot. Detectives do not know what drew Craft to the location.

Nicks said Craft had attended Rancho Cotate and El Camino high schools. Nothing in his past that they were aware of suggested a motive. Nicks said.

"He is a local kid that grew up in Rohnert Park and attended local schools," Craft said.

It is the first homicide in the city of 43,000 people since February 2010, when guitar maker Taku Sakashita was killed in his Martin Avenue workshop on the city's west side.

Joshua Begley, 29, was convicted of murder in that case and sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Anyone with information should call Rohnert Park Public Safety at 584-2630.
