Rubber dam goes in Monday near Forestville

A rubber dam across the Russian River near Forestville will be inflated on Monday to create a pool for Sonoma County Water Agency's intake system.

It also creates a barrier for fish, which will have two fish ladders to move upstream, and for boaters, who will be steered to a portage area on the south side of the Russian River.

The dam is inflated every year when the Russian River drops to summer levels to create a lake for the water agency's intake system, which pumps water from the Russian River into four filtration ponds and water agency extraction pumps.

The water is used by 600,000 residents in the cities of Windsor, Santa Rosa, Petaluma, Rohnert Park, Cotati and Sonoma and the Valley of the Moon, North Marin and Marin water districts.
