SMART dismisses finance chief

The chief financial officer of the Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit District has been dismissed, but officials declined to state any reasons Wednesday as they announced his departure.

Board Chairwoman Valerie Brown would only say that David Heath was terminated without cause.

Heath, a Sebastopol resident, has served as chief financial officer since July 2010. He did not return a telephone call seeking comment Wednesday.

Heath, who previously served as the city of Santa Rosa's chief financial officer, acted as SMART interim general manager for four months this year after GM Lillian Hames abruptly resigned in January.

He had been on paid administrative leave from his post since Oct. 19 and was notified of his dismissal on Oct. 24.

His last day of employment is officially Dec. 24.

Heath will receive a severance package that includes five months of his salary. He was paid $165,000 a year.

By contract, Heath was employed at the will of the SMART board.

General Manager Farhad Mansourian said the duties of the chief financial officer will be handled by several staff members until a replacement is named.
