Sonoma children's museum hosts first public event

The Children's Museum of Sonoma County on Sunday will host the first public event at its new site in west Santa Rosa.

The family play day runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will feature activities from the popular Museum-on-the-Go in addition to an exhibit on loan from the Sacramento Children's Museum called Raceways, which allows children to experiment with velocity, gravity, motion, friction, and acceleration.

Museum officials will also display renovation plans for the building it began leasing last December at 1835 W. Steele Lane, next to the Charles M. Schulz Museum.

Plans include an outdoor nature education area called Mary's Garden, for which the children's museum received a $1.8 million state grant.

Another $1.8 million must be raised for renovations and new exhibits.

Participants in Sunday's MayDay is PlayDay will be asked to donate $3. An additional $2 buys lunch provided by the Active 20-30 Club of Santa Rosa No. 50.
