Sebastopol man pulled from burning car, then handcuffed in suspected hit-and-run on Highway 12

A suspected hit-and-run driver was detained Friday morning after his van struck three other vehicles before becoming disabled and catching fire, according to the CHP.

The incident, which occurred at 9:30 a.m., also closed Highway 12 at Llano Road for 30 minutes, according to the CHP.

A van driven at speeds of 80 to 100 mph eastbound on Highway 12 rear-ended a pickup that was stopped at the intersection of Llano Road and then side-swiped two other vehicles that were waiting to turn left on to Llano Road, said Officer Jonathan Sloat of the CHP.

When the van became disabled and stopped on Highway 12 and caught fire, a Sonoma County Sheriff's deputy broke a window and got the driver out of the van.

Sloat said the driver became combative and was handcuffed.

The driver, identified as Diego Jameau, 54, of Sebastopol, was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. The crash remained under investigation.

Another driver in the incident complained of pain and was taken to Sutter Hospital, according to Sloat.

CLARIFICATION: A follow-up article was published June 14, 2011:

A Sebastopol man initially suspected of hit-and-run driving on Highway 12 instead was in the throes of a medical seizure and couldn't control his vehicle or himself, the CHP reported Monday. "There will be no charges filed. He didn't intend to do a hit and run, and he didn't intend to fight with the officer," reported CHP Officer Jon Sloat.
