Oroville man falls asleep at the wheel and hits stump

A 22-year-old Oroville man fell asleep while driving early Monday and crashed into a tree stump southeast of Sonoma, CHP officials said.

He suffered moderate injuries in the crash. Sonoma Valley fire paramedics took him to Queen of the Valley Medical Center in Napa, according to a Napa-area CHP spokeswoman.

Driver Matthew Wirick was heading west on Napa Road near Arrowhead Mountain Road at about 6:50 a.m. when he dozed off, she said.

He was driving a 2005 Chevy Trailblazer at the speed limit when he drifted off the road and slammed into the stump, according to a CHP report.
