Santa Rosa Symphony, union OK pact

The Santa Rosa Symphony has announced that it has reached an agreement with the American Federation of Musicians Union Local 292 on a new, three-year contract.

Under the new contract, musicians will receive a wage increase of 2 percent per year. Prior to the 2010-'11 season, AFM Union Local 292 had agreed to the symphony association's request to freeze the wage scale at the expired 2009-2010 rates, helping to minimize an anticipated operating deficit.

In addition, the new agreement allows greater flexibility in the number of the musicians' required services for the Santa Rosa Symphony.

That provision enables contracted musicians to generate more income by having time to accept other performance offers.

As part of a new provision in the contract, the musicians will form a Musicians' Leadership Committe that will meet annnually with the music director and association representatives on non-contractural matters related to artistic welfare.

The new contract begins July 1, 2011 and extends through the Santa Rosa Symphony's first two seasons at the Green Music Center, where the symphony will begin performing as orchestra-in-residence beginning in the fall of 2012.

"Given the fiscal challenges so many orchestras face today, we are delighted to have negotiated a new multi-year agreement," Santa Rosa Symphony Executive Director Alan Silow said in a press release.

"It will enable us to remain both fiscally and artistically strong as we enter a new era at the Green Music Center."
