Susan Adams, Marin County supervisor, to run for Woolsey's seat

Marin County Supervisor Susan Adams announced Wednesday that she is running for the congressional seat held by Rep. Lynn Woolsey, D-Petaluma, who is not seeking re-election in 2012.

Adams, who represents the San Rafael area, has served on the Marin board since 2002. She earlier formed a campaign committee, but held off entering the congressional race until Woolsey's announcement on June 27 that she was stepping down at the end of her term, concluding 20 years on Capitol Hill.

Adams, a nurse practitioner who has master's and doctoral degrees from UC San Francisco, said she has worked as a supervisor on green energy jobs, therapeutic justice programs and services for homeless veterans.

Last year Adams beat Kerry Mazzoni, a former state assemblywoman and state education secretary, getting 53 percent of the vote in Marin's 1st supervisorial district.

State Assemblyman Jared Huffman, D-San Rafael, and Marin political activist Norman Solomon are also candidates for Woolsey's seat.

Redistricting maps released last week put put Marin and southern and eastern Sonoma County into a congressional district with Napa and Lake counties and a portion of San Francisco. Rep. Mike Thompson, D-St. Helena, a seven-term incumbent, lives in Napa County.

The final maps are due for release July 26.
