Would-be burglars attempted to break into the Marin County Juvenile Hall Friday, possibly trying to free a young man charged with a stealing a Lamborghini owned by Santa Rosa celebrity chef Guy Fieri's.
Juvenile Hall staff heard the attempted break-in at 4:35 a.m. Friday.
But the suspects fled as soon as they were detected, leaving behind bolt cutters and a sledge hammer, Marin County Sheriff's Lt. Barry Heying said. Officials searched the area for two hours but apprehended no one.
On the other side of the wall: Max Wade of San Rafael, Heying said.
Wade is accused of stealing Fieri's bright yellow Lamborghini from a San Francisco dealership in a brash March 8, 2011 heist that involved rappelling into the shop through a skylight.
Wade was linked to the theft more than a year later when he was arrested in connection the attempted shooting in Mill Valley of a 17-year-old girl. Prosecutors said Wade fired at the girl, whom he had previously tried to impress by taking her for rides in the Lamborghini. He's also accused of firing at the girl's boyfriend.
After the shooting, detectives began following Wade, who eventually led them to a storage unit in Richmond where the sports car was kept, officials said.
He was arrested April 29.
Detectives Friday were investigating whether the Juvenile Hall break-in attempt was linked to Wade, Heying said. Officials later Friday moved Wade to the Marin County Jail, as he just became an adult.
Wade, who has pleaded not guilty to vehicle theft and attempted murder charges, is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 7 for a preliminary hearing, according to the Associated Press.
