DRIVER SOUGHT AFTER CHASING, HITTING CYCLIST ON GOLF COURSE

A motorist in a violent case of road rage Thursday chased a bicyclist 100 yards onto the Oakmont Golf Course before running him down, Santa Rosa police said.

The cyclist, who was not identified, suffered moderate but non-life-threatening injuries, police Sgt. Andrew Romero said.

"This is crazy, that is why we are all wondering what the heck is going on," Romero said. "That is direct and purposeful, it is intentional."

The incident happened at 5:15 p.m. when the motorist, described as an elderly man with white hair, pulled up alongside the cyclist on Pythian Road in Oakmont, started yelling at him and tried to hit him, Romero said.

"Trying to escape the driver, he went on to the cart path on to the fairway. It is not a roadway, so he thought he could escape the wrath of the driver," Romero said.

The driver, though, followed the cyclist on the cart path for at least 100 yards before he caught up and struck the cyclist from behind, Romero said.

"This is something that is very, very shocking to all of us," Romero said.

The car is described as a beige or gold sedan, possibly a Toyota Corolla, with a broken sideview mirror on the passenger side.

Police are also looking for witnesses to the incident. Anyone with information can call the Santa Rosa police department's Violent Crime Investigations Team at 543-3590.
