Sheriff's helicopter tracks escapees from youth probation camp; 1 still at large

Two teen boys walked away from the Sonoma County Probation Camp north of Forestville Sunday but it was a brief escape for one while the second teen remained at large Sunday afternoon, sheriff's officials reported.

The two were reported missing at 12:15 p.m.

The Sonoma County sheriff's helicopter headed for the area at about 12:25 p.m. The camp is off of rural Eastside Road near the Russian River.

The helicopter crew searched along River, Healdsburg-Trenton and Eastside roads, reported Deputy Debbie Little, of the helicopter crew.

They spotted one youth hiding by a fence near Eastside Road. The crew gave deputies the location and the 17-year-old was taken back into custody at about 12:40 p.m.

A 16-year-old remained at large later Sunday afternoon.

The probation camp, which isn't secured, is a facility for about two dozen teen boys who've gotten into trouble with the law. The camp's goal is to give them an opportunity to learn skills, continue schooling and modify their behavior.
