Letter of the Day: Independent who cares

Independent who cares

EDITOR: I am an independent voter, and I do not like a welfare state. However, I have been helped directly by the government a number of times throughout my life. I am a product of the mixed welfare state and the free enterprise system.

I can understand the frustration that allegedly 47 percent of our citizens do not, at this time in their lives, earn enough to pay federal income taxes. But this is an unfortunate economic condition and, for most of these fellow Americans, a reflection of the Great Recession, being a student and/or temporary circumstances. How can Mitt Romney write off so many, so casually and so callously? This private talk to his wealthy donors makes him appear to not care.

I was raised in the Christian faith to have love and compassion toward other people. I am a "compassionate independent." I do care. So now, for sure, I will vote to re-elect the president. I hope you do to.
