Sonoma County supervisors Tuesday appointed one of their own, Supervisor Mike McGuire, to serve as their representative on an advisory committee tasked with reviewing the operating agreement that governs the county library system.
The Board of Supervisors has voiced its interest in seeing the 37-year-old agreement between the county and its cities revised. Supervisors have not said exactly what they want out of any changes, aside from greater communication and collaboration with the library's independent governing commission and its executive leadership.
Current Library Director Sandy Cooper has come in for some strong criticism before the board this year. The review has prompted some to speculate that supervisors are seeking more direct control of library functions, including the ability to hire or fire the director. Supervisors have also voiced frustration over their limited input on the library system's budget.
The 11-member advisory panel consists of representatives from each of the nine cities, the county and the library commission.
The first public meeting is tentatively set for Oct. 26, with a location yet to be announced. For more information call 565-2431.
