A wildfire that began burning in the Comptche area of Mendocino County Monday afternoon was held to about 200 acres overnight and by Tuesday morning was about 25 percent contained.
Five buildings, including at least one home, were destroyed, said fire officials.
Firefighters on Tuesday's effort totaled 654. They were aided by 37 fire engines, four planes and three helicopters.
Cal Fire officials hoped to have the blaze fully contained by 6 p.m. today.
By Tuesday morning, the fire was threatening about 20 buildings, down from 70 structures threatened Monday night.
The cause of the fire remained under investigation Tuesday.
Comptche, about 20 miles southeast of Fort Bragg, is timber country. The fire Tuesday was burning to the east of some commercial timber property.
The day's expected high temperatures were working against the firefighting efforts.
The fire started at about 2:15 p.m. Monday near Flynn Creek Road in a field behind the Comptche firehouse.
