New charges were filed Wednesday against a Contra Costa County woman suspected of using stolen identification to open a half-dozen bank accounts.
Denise Michelle Hankins, also known as Denise Wagoner, 42, of Oakley, was arrested at a Rohnert Park hotel in September. Police said they found her with a briefcase of stolen IDs, counterfeit checks, forged documents and stolen mail.
She was initially charged with identity theft, burglary and forgery. After further investigation, prosecutors filed 59 additional charges Wednesday, including grand theft and embezzlement.
The alleged victims include not only banks but at least 10 people and several stores, said Amy Ariyoshi, deputy district attorney. Most of the victims live in Sonoma County, she said.
"We were getting reports little by little," Ariyoshi said.
She said it was unclear exactly how much money was stolen but estimated it was less than $100,000.
Hankins, who served time in federal prison for mail and identity theft, was being held on $120,000 bail. She will return to court Nov. 2 to consider a plea bargain carrying a 15-year sentence.
Her maximum prison sentence if convicted of all charges is more than 40 years.
