Woman, dog escape burning car near Bodega Bay

A Bodega Bay woman who lost control of her minivan and overturned off Highway 1 near the Sonoma Coast late Saturday morning was still trapped in the vehicle when her engine caught fire, CHP and fire personnel said.

Luckily, the fire was not especially large, and Bodega Bay firefighters were able to cut her - and her dog - from the wreckage before either suffered further injury, fire personnel said.

It was unclear what caused the woman, whose name was not immediately available, to lose control of the minivan as she headed west on Highway 1 toward Bodega Bay.

She was near Estero Lane, between Bodega Highway and Bay Hill Road, around 11:31 a.m. when she went off the road, overcorrected and rolled the van, which landed on the driver's side, emergency personnel said.

The woman and a golden retriever in the van both suffered minor injuries in the initial impact, but then were trapped as the fire started in the engine compartment, Bodega Bay Fire Capt. Dave Bynum said.

"Being trapped inside - especially in the position it was in - she was pretty scared," Bynum said.

Firefighters broke through the rear of the van and got her out, rushing her to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, he said

Sonoma County Animal Control personnel took the dog for veterinary treatment, Bynum said.
