EDITOR: Last Tuesday, I watched my son's Healdsburg Greyhounds baseball team take a real shellacking from the Casa Grande Gauchos. What impressed me most was not the skill and ability of the Gaucho players, which are typical of a Casa team, but their comportment in the face of overwhelming victory.
The week before these boys had lost a close game to the Hounds in their own tournament and, I imagine, had come to Healdsburg loaded for bear. Revenge was theirs in a big way. Yet I heard not one word of trash talk, taunting or name calling. The only calls coming from the Gaucho dugout were those of encouragement for their own teammates.
In allowing a measure of respect for their opponents, the team demonstrated its greater respect for the game of baseball. I applaud Coach Paul Maytorena and his squad for their class. They play this wonderful game the right way.
