Letter of the Day: Driving tests

Driving tests

EDITOR: Applicants for a driver's license renewal who are approaching their 85th birthday, or older, should be required to pass a road test. Where do I get the number 85? The same place that someone, long ago, got the number 16, suggesting that persons of that age are sufficiently mature to be licensed to drive.

I am about to turn 91. If my license is renewed (next week) without a road test, I will hire a professional examiner to certify my competence with respect to all elements not already tested by the DMV.

One other detail: Only the DMV can review the records looking for citations and accidents in recent years. It should do so, at least as an added hurdle for senior applicants and possibly for all.
