Santa Rosa-area crash blamed on yellow jacket wasp

A busy intersection north of Santa Rosa was closed for 3? hours Monday after a car hit a power pole and fire hydrant as the driver swatted at a yellow jacket wasp, the CHP said.

The intersection of Old Redwood Highway and Airport Boulevard in Wikiup was closed from 2 to 5:30 p.m.

PG&E spokeswoman Jana Morris said Monday night a repair crew arrived at the scene at 4:14 p.m. and repairs were to be completed by midnight.

Electricity for 39 customers was cut while the pole was replaced, Morris said.

The accident was reported at 1:43 p.m. when the black Honda Accord struck the pole and hydrant.

The driver, Erika Yeske, 18, of Santa Rosa, told officers she was swatting at the yellow jacket in her car when she lost control of it, CHP Officer Brian Hiss said.

Yeske was not injured, he said.
