A Humboldt County man was arrested Wednesday night on suspicion of possessing and transporting marijuana for sale after he was pulled over for driving in a vehicle with illegally tinted windows.
According to the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office, John Denney, 36, of McKinleyville was driving on Highway 101 near Laytonville when deputies spotted his vehicle.
The tinted windows violated state vehicle code 26708, which prohibits people from driving vehicles that have "any object or material placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied upon the windshield or side or rear windows." Deputies said they stopped Denney as he was driving 75 miles per hour. A K-9 deputy named "Ben" was on the scene and picked up the scent of marijuana and alerted other deputies, officials said.
A search of the vehicle produced four large empty rubberized "sea bag" duffle bags, which sheriff's officials said are often used to transport marijuana. Officials also found one pound of marijuana buds, numerous documents that allegedly showed marijuana sales transactions, a Taser and more than $130,000 in cash.
Denney was arrested booked into Mendocino County Jail on suspicion of possession and transportation of marijuana, as well as possession of drug sales money. Denney's bail was set at $50,000. He has since posted bail and been released.
