Banners honoring military members go up in Rohnert Park

Banners honoring active-duty members of the military flew Wednesday in Rohnert Park, marking what Coast Guard veteran Andy Durkee hopes will be a permanent display.

Durkee led the effort to convince the city to hoist the 10 banners, which are red, white and blue and bear the name and image of the person whom they honor.

Businesses and individuals sponsored each banner for $130, while the city agreed to mount them on lampposts at City Center Plaza.

"It's just another way to sort of say thanks for your service," said Durkee, 70.

"It's nonpolitical," he said. "It's just something that the community says: 'Thanks for serving your country.' "
