Chik-fil-A is asking the Santa Rosa City Council to overturn a decision rejecting plans for a fast-food restaurant because of it's drive-thru on Mendocino Avenue, on the site of a vacant former Burger King building.

Protecting neighbors

EDITOR: I read with interest Tuesday's editorial ("Choosing an eyesore over a drive-thru") about the proposed Chick-fil-A drive-thru on Mendocino Avenue. I agree, the old Burger King site is an eyesore. What the editorial missed about the proposed project, and the drive-thru, are the effects on the neighbors directly behind that property.

If you were a homeowner, would you like cars idling in your backyard or pulling in and out of a parking lot in your backyard? That was an issue when it was still a Burger King. Those citizens had car emissions to deal with and the smell of cooking oil, too.

The Santa Rosa Junior College Neighborhood Association opposed this project to protect property owners on Slater Street and to protect everyone from the effects of emissions on air quality.

I live in this neighborhood, and I wonder if perhaps the bigger question is do we need another fast-food restaurant on Mendocino Avenue between College Avenue and Steele Lane? I can already count 21 eateries to choose from. Isn't that enough for our neighborhood and for the citizens traveling Mendocino Avenue?
